Max, boyishly handsome in rock-star style, is surprisingly a dedicated teacher of teenage foreign students in a Stockholm suburb – immigrant kids and asylum seekers from troubled lands. Some are “on the rails,” some “going off,” but most are reluctant pupils, which drives most of Max’s colleagues to long-term sickness. In despair, Max calls his own teacher Folke, 73 years-old, eccentric, to try the old-fashioned approach, as modern methods are failing. Legendary Folke arrives, rises to the challenge, and though initially shocked, sees through their rebellious exteriors to the anxieties beneath, and lays down the law. Will Dog eat dog!
Meanwhile, Max is away on a class holiday, the success of which is uncertain, and then everyone needs to prepare for the school dance, the showcase of the year. Will these students get satisfactory passes which enable them to dodge deportment and stay to make a secure future? And what of the substitute’s progress?
An authentic classroom drama with an unexpected ending in neutral Sweden, safe haven for refugees of tyranny.
