I was born in 1974. April 11, in Budapest.
One of the most determinant experiences of my life happened to me at the age of thirteen when I took an S8 format in my hand.I decided to become film director.
In 1995 I won the special award in best fiction at the Independent Film and Video Festival in Hungary for my film “Break and Csekk II.”
Between 1995 and 2000 I studied at the Theatre and Film Academy in Budapest specialized to film directing. I could be one of those lucky ones who were graduated in that class, which is still a strong community and after leaving school we founded our own association and film company, Madzagfilm and Katapult Film Ltd.
I made some short films throughout my studies, some of them have been invited to national film festivals.
My first feature film was Hukkle in 2002. I examined this little village’s life for almost one and a half years, before I started to shoot; it was a really devotional work, which finally brought me success. I got the award of the Best First Film, the Gene Moskowitz Prize of Foreign Critiques, the Student Award, the Hungarian Critique’s Award in 33rd Hungarian Filmweek. It has been followed by several others. I won the Fassbinder Award of European Film Academy in 2003, and Hukkle got festival invitations from all over the world!
In 2003 I took part in a project with four other directors called A Bus Came. I did the part Shaman vs. Ikarus. I got the shared prize of Best Director on the 35th Hungarian Filmweek.
And now Taxidermia in 2006-2007. It is five years strenuous work.
Taxidermia brought me the award of the Best Film, and the Gene Moskowitz Prize of Foreign Critiques among many others on the 37th Hungarian Filmweek.
My wife, Zsófia Ruttkay and I wrote the screenplay of Taxidermia, which won the award of Sundance/NHK in the category of “Best European Film Project” in 2004.
She’s my constant creative partner, without her, I think I would be a one-armed giant. Our son Misi, is three years old - as a baby already appears in Taxidermia – and our daughter Magdolna Vilma is one year old.
