In 1949 France is still traumatised by the shock of the recent war. Young boys with behavioural problems, some of them orphans, are sent to a harshly-run boarding school, Le Fond de l’Etang, where they are entrusted to the care of a sadistic principal. However, despite his repressive educational régime, Mr Rachin is barely able to keep in check the difficult pupils, who play every trick in the book while trying to evade solitary confinement and other punishments.
When Clement Mathieu, an unemployed professional musician, is appointed supervisor in the school, the whole life of the establishment is overturned. Determined to bring something positive into the students’ lives through music, Mathieu starts a choir and as he introduces the boys to the magic of singing, they are transformed. Nothing will ever be the same again.
