Daniel Höpfner discovered a book and was fascinated by the photo of a young woman. The book says: in her crazed imaginings she was fabulously rich, and a queen of the first order. Proudly, and with a raised “scepter” in her hand, the “Ex-Queen” sets off to explore the length and breadth of her ruined realm.

Daniel Höpfner made his film Cherchez la Femme using classic puppet cartoon techniques. He builds the plot around 19th century story which he found in a book called "Doktor Diamonds Bildnisse von Geisteskranken" (Doctor Diamond’s Portraits of Madmen). Daniel Höpfner was particularly fascinated by a picture of a young woman in this book who called herself Queen A.D. and imagined that she was enormously rich. Proud and with sceptre raised, she wanted to travel through her crumbling realm. The story is consummately distilled in these classically animated puppet scenes to create a poetic, dark film painting, smouldering with imagination and melancholy.
