It is a great delight to witness the successful opening of the fourth Osaka European Film Festival. I would like to express my deep respect for the enthusiasm and efforts of Mr Patrice Boiteau and all those concerned in organizing it. Since it was established in 1994, the Festival has grown in size and quality, introducting new films from Europe which portray the reality of contemporary life there, as well as bringing a rich variety of guests to Osaka. Through the excellent films in its programme, the festival has deepened our knowledge of European societies and cultures. It is my pleasure that, for the citizens of Osaka, this event has become one of the main features of the autumn season. With the 21st century just around the corner, we are in a period of internationalization. Osaka City is making efforts to be one of the international cities of the new century, promoting new culture while maintaining our history and tradition. It is my wish that Osaka City should also be known as an international sports city. Osaka is one of the candidates bidding to hold the 2008 Olympics and I Would like to ask for your cooperation and support. Finally, I would like to close my congratulations by hoping that the Osaka European Film Festival will continue to flourish and grow.
