The film details the mishaps that befall Jean-Philippe TOUSSAINT alter-ego, the film’s Director and his crew as they frantically struggle to complete the deeply symbolic romantic hockey movie Dolores before the deadline for the Venice Film Festival.
The shoot begins in a real ice rink with a Lithuanian hockey team, a narcissistic muscleboy American star who doesn’t speak a word of French and an ingénue actress who is only too susceptible to her co-star’s charm. The director and his long-suffering assistant face every problem in the book - melting ice, a garrulous rink manager and a pushy producer desperate to get the film to Venice at any cost.
Toussaint pitches his comic-strip gags somewhere between the poker-faced sang-froid of Jacques Tati and the frenzy of early Jerry Lewis. The priceless climax pays improbable tribute to the glory days of Cinecittà, and a diverse supporting cast have the time of their lives in an audaciously left-field, shamelessly frivolous entertainment.
