Art students at a Paris university Bertrand (Philippe Beuzen) and Guillaume (Christian Charrière) become involved in a three way affair. While his love for another woman remains unrequited Bertrand watches helplessly from the sidelines as his friend exploits his new lover Suzanne (Catherine Sèe). Contemptuous of Guillaume for his cruelty and of Suzanne for her meek submission Bertand comes to suspect that Suzanne is secretly in love with him.
La Carriére de Suzanne was the second short film from Rohmer’s six moral tales series. Filmed in black and white, on 16mm film, it has a still, studied air and a strong focus on character. Bertrand’s moral dilemma - choosing between two women - may only exist in his head but for him it is all too real.
