A housewife (Marina Vlady) works as a prostitute by night as a means of supporting herself. Her story becomes the starting point for a wider socio-political meditation on life in Paris and its inhabitants. As Godard sees it this is a cold place filled with rampant commercialism and a population who are unconcerned with the events changing the world.
Made at the peak of Jean-Luc Godard’s popularity and creativity Deux ou Trois Choses Que Je Sais D’Elle was filmed simultaneously with Made in USA, with one being shot at night while the other was shot in the day. The ’Elle’ or ’her’ in the title refers not just to the lead but to Paris itself. Although the narrative is elusive the film succeeds as a social essay as Godard examines many of the themes - consumerism, war, sexual politics, that remain relevant today.
