Angela (Anna Karina), a striptease artist, wants to have a baby but her boyfriend, Emile (Jean-Claude Brialy) isn’t ready for the responsibility of fatherhood and suggests that his friend Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo) father the child. A comic farce of misunderstanding and jealousies ensues before Angela’s problems are resolved.
Une Femme est une Femme is Godard’s typically individual take on the musical-comedy. Much as he did for gangster films in the previous year’s À Bout de Souffle he breaks down and reconstructs the conventions of the genre. While the look and design echo the great Hollywood musicals the score is disjointed and the straightforward plot allows for some nuanced performances. Although not one of his most influential films Une Femme est une Femme is regarded as one of Godard’s more accessible works.
