The lives of disturbed former soldiers, human traffickers and prostitutes all come together in this rugged Danish drama.
Lotte returns to Denmark after her stint in the army and tour of Afghanistan abruptly ends. Needing money, she takes a job as her father’s driver, but as she learns that he has a side business as a pimp running Nigerian girls, she ends up working as a driver for his top prostitutes, Lily, who is also her father’s mistress. Bordering on alcoholism and uncertain of her relationship with her charismatic father Lotte forms a bond with Lily, a woman with troubles of her own.
Little Soldier is the fourth collaboration between director Annette K. Olesen and screenwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson. The pair previously made a splash with the Dogme film Minor Mishaps, although Little Soldier is filmed in a traditional manner. Lead actress Trine Dyrholm is regarded as Denmark’s foremost female performer. In what is essentially an actors piece she delivers a powerful performance as the dispossessed ex-soldier struggling to come to terms with her identity.
