This broad documentary takes in not just the citizens of Amsterdam but looks at a diverse range of individuals, lifestyles, and cultures across modern Europe.
Our guide is a young Moroccan working as motorbike messenger. As he runs through the cities on his motorbike, we see the various people and societies he comes in contact with. We meet a young couple from Bolivia and Holland expecting their first child, a Chechen entrepreneur, a Bosnian rock band and a Jewish family who escaped the Nazi’s.
Director Johan van der Keuken takes pains to give us people not just as they live now but to reach back into their pasts and show us the places they came from. Running at over four hours Amsterdam Global Village is a slice of the new, borderless Europe with its multiple communities grinding slowly against each other.
