No Planes No Trains is a deceptively simple film about a day in an ordinary Dutch café. Gerard disposes of all his belongings and goes to the local café where he is a regular.
The owner, Joop, is as unfriendly as ever, but Gerard finds companionships among the other patrons and Paula, the woman he loves, who is more interested in trying to extract money from a mysterious stranger. Gerard announces that he is moving to Italy but in the face of disinterest embellishes his story claiming that the famous singer Mario Russo is his brother and it is agreed that Gerard should call Mario on the phone.
One of two Jos Stelling films showing at the OEFF this year, No Planes No Trains is a dry left-field comedy featuring a strong cast of character actors. It won the grand prix at the 1999 St. Petersburg film festival.
