Farmer Henk struggles to make a living as he stoically works his lonely family farm in northern Holland. One day he discovers a beaten young Polish woman, Anna, on his lands. Anna has fled from a pair of Mafiosi who run the brothel she has been forced to work in. Henk aggrees to shelter Anna in exchange for housekeeping and a small wage she sends to her daughter in Poland. Gradually Henk and Anna fall in love and some warmth returns to their lives, but Anna’s life remains in danger from her pursuers.
Algerian director Karim Traïdia’s view of life in the Dutch countryside has been widely praised for its accuracy, intimacy and tender portrayal of cross-cultural romance. The Polish Bride won numerous awards domestically and internationally as well as receiving a Golden Globe nomination.
