Left Luggage is the directorial debut of the popular and prolific actor Jeroen Krabbe, a well established star in Europe and a noted character actor in Hollywood appearing in films such as The Fugitive and Ocean’s Twelve.
Set in Antwerp in 1972, the film tells the story of Chaja, a Jewish college student who has fallen out of touch with her religion and history. She takes a job as a babysitter in a strict Jewish household and forms a bond with the family’s youngest child, Simcha. Simcha is mentally handicapped and, at age five, unable to speak, but through his relationship with Chaja, he is drawn out into a world more dangerous than he can understand.
Based on Carl Friedman’s novel The Shovel and the Loom, Left Luggage features a stellar cast including Isabella Rossellini, Maximillian Schell, Laura Fraser and Krabbe himself. The film won numerous awards and was nominated for the Berlin Golden Bear.
