A considerable international success on its initial release, The Vanishing remains a powerful and unsettling thriller.
Rex and Saskia, a young Dutch couple, are on a driving vacation from Amsterdam to Paris. When they stop at a gas station, Saskia goes to buy a drink and never returns. Driven near mad by her disappearance, Rex spends the next three years searching for her until he starts to receive postcards from her abductor who promises to reveal her fate to Rex.
Filmed in a mixture of French and Dutch, The Vanishing draws out the tension with an intense focus on character and a minimal use of violence. Director George Sluizer went on to shoot a down market Hollywood remake but this original work is a modern suspense classic.
