Liesbeth, a well-to-do housewife, lives an empty life with her psychiatrist husband and three children. Seeking a change, she posts a newspaper advertisement inviting applicants to trade lives with her for a month and agrees a swap with the carefree Monika. While Monika struggles with the housework and children, Liesbeth finds a job and a new social and sexual freedom, but will she be welcomed back by her family who soon take to Monika’s easygoing manner ?
Based on the play by Jan Donkers, One Month Later is by turns comic and dramatic. Director Nouchka van Brakel started out as a documentary filmmaker in the 1960’s making films about the role of women in society and One Month Later offers a view on women’s choices in late 1980’s Holland.
