Polish director Dorota Kedzierzawska is best known for her films dealing dealing with disadvantaged children. In Time to Die she takes a new direction turning her lens on a subject at the tail end of her life.
Nonagenarian Aniela lives alone with her faithful companion, Border Collie dog Phila. Determined to see out her days on her own terms she spends her life spying on her nouveau-riche neighbors, resisting the taunts of the local children and receiving occasional visits from her feckless son who has designs on her rundown wooden mansion.
A gentle character study shot in lush black and white Time to Die stars Polish screen and stage legend Danuta Szaflarska in a role specifically written for her. Now 92 Szaflarska’s career dates back over sixty years and many triumphs. Her performance as the tenacious pensioner Aniela won her the best actress award at the 32nd Polish Film Festival.
