In the 1890’s a priest, Adolf Daens, travels to Aalst, a town dominated by the textile industry. There he discovers the terrible working conditions of the poor with the majority of children forced into manual labor. Meanwhile the ruling elite, backed by the Catholic Church, live in ease and luxury. Daens becomes a champion of the working masses after writing a series of articles decrying their state and enters parliament fight in their defence. His actions bring him into conflict with the powers that be and he is forced to choose between his religion and his people.
Stix Coninx’s film collected numerous awards around the world and was nominated for a best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The film is based on the real life preacher Daens who helped workers all across Europe with his campaigns against the abuses of the ruling class.
Aalst (Belgique), 1893. Aux usines, tout un peuple d’hommes, de femmes, d’enfants, travaille treize heures par jour dans d’atroces conditions. Le nombre d’accidents mortels augmente. Nette, une jeune ouvrière, déclenche une grève spontanée. Elle fait appel à l’abbé Adolf Daens qui fait paraître un article relatant les conditions de travail. L’article fait l’effet d’une bombe au Parlement. Une commission d’enquête est constituée malgré l’opposition de Charles Woeste, le président du parti catholique conservateur. Woeste met en scène le discrédit de l’abbé: complicité locale, hiérarchie épiscopale et une offensive diplomatique dirigée par le roi Léopold II en personne, qui aboutit au désaveu de l’abbé Daens par le pape Léon XIII. À la suite d’une pression ultime de Charles Woeste, il est acculé à choisir entre la prêtrise et son mandat politique…
Aalst (Belgie), 1893. Mannen, vrouwen en kinderen werken dagelijks 13 uur lang in de fabrieken in erbarmelijke en vaak gevaarlijke omstandigheden. Ongevallen met fatale afloop nemen toe. Nette, een jonge arbeidster, neemt het voortouw bij een wilde staking. Ze doet beroep op priester Daens’ hulp. Daens laat een artikel verschijnen over de bedroevende werkomstandigheden. De uitwerking ervan is explosief. Tot in het Parlement toe. Een onderzoekscommissie word opgericht ondaks de oppositie van Charles Woeste, de voorzitter van de Katholieke Konservatieve Partij. Woeste leidt een campagne om priester Daens in oospraak te brengen: locale samenzweringen, kerkelijke hierarchie en een diplomatiek offensief ingezet door koning Leopold II in hoogsteigen persoon leiden tenslotte tot een ingrijpen van paus Leo XIII. Een ultieme druk uitgeofend door Charles Woeste verplicht Daens ertoe te kiezen tussen zijn priesterschap en zijn politiek mandaat…
