In 1985 the legendary industrial band, Einsturzende Neubauten traveled to Japan and this film is a document of their visit seen through the eyes of underground filmmaker, Sogo Ishii.
The set begins with the band playing their assorted “instruments” alone in the post-industrial like landscape of an abandoned warehouse and extends outwards into discordant, even disturbing territory, casting various band members into unique scenarios and montaging images in odd sequences to build a pseudo-narrative of sorts.
Images of flesh, metal and concrete interplay with images of Butoh dance, S&M gymnastics and the band itself, attempting to capture the forceful power and unique vision of this troupe the original post-punks from Germany.
The accompanying soundtrack is appropriately harsh and confronting, intricate use of scraping metal and the delicate drones of power tools wraps the whole package into an experience as close as possible to seeing the monster, Einsturzende Neubauten, perform live.
