God has instructed his angels to find the lost tablets bearing the Ten Commandments and bring them back to heaven. But he forbids the angels to make the journey to earth themselves. Their assignment is to ’create’ a human being clever enough to find the tablets, but also willing to sacrifice his life to return them to heaven.

The angels’ ingenious but heartless plan starts to take shape when eccentric linguist Onno Quist, son of a former prime minister, meets by chance astronomer Max Delius, son of a Nazi father and a Jewish mother. The two men immediately become friends, allowing only the cellist Ada Brons into their circle of intimacy. Ada discovers she is pregnant – with the child of either Max or Onno. When the boy, Quinten, is born he soon reveals he has exceptional gifts. Is he the chosen one? Will he be able to fulfil the angels’ mission?
